The director of Friday will reteam with Ice Cube to bring the iconic Compton hip hop crew's story to life.

For such an outspoken musical act, there hasn't been much talk about the N.W.A. biopic since it was announced back in September. Back then it seemed that John Singleton was getting ready to direct, which would have been a relief after his recent and disappointing mainstream efforts (Abduction, Four Brothers, 2 Fast 2 Furious), but that deal appears to have fallen through, leaving room for F. Gary Gray to step in and direct Straight Outta Compton for Ice Cube's Cube Vision production company, according to Deadline. Come to think of it, it's a refreshing change of pace for Gray, whose most recent films, Law Abiding Citizen and Be Cool, were pretty underwhelming too.

It's an exciting reunion for Cube, Gray and Friday fans, since it's the first time the rapper (turned family film star) and the director of the Italian Job remake have collaborated on the big screen since 1995. Captain America fans may have somewhat mixed feelings: Gray had made Marvel Studios' short list to direct the sequel to last year's superhero blockbuster, and most likely won't be able tackle both projects, leaving room for The Adjustment Bureau's George Nolfi and "Community's" Anthony & Joseph Russo as the frontrunners, although Deadline also suggests that Marvel is starting to look elsewhere for Captain America 2. It's hard not to be supportive of that decision, since that's still one weird crop of talent for a superhero movie.

The controversial – and awesome – hip hop crew N.W.A. jumpstarted the careers of Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Eazy E, MC Ren and DJ Yella, meaning that casting is going to be key to Straight Outta Compton's success. Who the hell do you get to play a young Cube, Dre or E, anyway? Those are some big-ass shoes to fill.

CraveOnline will be back with more Straight Outta Compton news after we do something rather untoward to tha police. Or something like that.
