Rumor: New 3DS Model Will Downplay 3D Tech

Nintendo may be working on a new version of the 3DS that de-emphasizes the importance of 3D.

There’s a scary rumor making its way around the gaming industry that Nintendo will be releasing a new model of the 3DS in 2012 that plays down the handheld’s 3D capabilities and adds an additional analog stick to the system. This news comes from French website 01net.

An anonymous source close to Nintendo told 01net that this new version of the 3DS will downplay the handheld’s 3D capabilities because Nintendo now fears that’s what’s driving customers away. Would-be purchasers are scared that playing in 3D for a prolonged period of time will lead to permanent eye damage. Because of this stigma, people are staying away from Nintendo’s new handheld and the thing is performing far worse than Nintendo anticipated, hence the recent price drop. This same news report also states that Nintendo might change the name of the handheld for the next model to distinguish it from the 3DS’s bad rap.

While the rumor of a major 3DS overhaul is disconcerting, the addition of a second analog stick is actually something we can get behind. The rumor states that Nintendo is actually actively pushing developers to create more games for the 3DS (or whatever it’s called) with twin analog sticks in mind. If true, this addition to the new model of 3DS will allow developers more design freedom. It will also make it much easier for developers to create shooter titles, for instance. And as we all know, gamers love shooters, which may lead to more systems sold in the long run, but that's just speculation on my part.

It might be a long time before we find out if this massive rumor is true or not. Other gaming outlets have pointed out that 01net has been on the money with rumors in the past, but they have also misfired from time to time. Basically, it’s a 50/50 crapshoot.

So in the meantime, why don’t you guys sound off in the comments below and let us know if you would buy a new model of the 3DS if the 3D tech was scaled back and it added a second analog stick. Would this be a handheld you could get behind if you haven’t apparently adopted the 3DS?
