Showtime Renews 'Shameless' and 'Episodes'

Last month, Showtime gave "Californication" a quick renewal for its fifth season after making an impressive showing with its fourth season premiere. And now, both of its companion series have also gotten a pickup from the network.

Earlier today, Showtime announced that "Episodes" and "Shameless" have been renewed for a second season. Production on both series is said to be scheduled for later this year in order to be ready to come back in early 2012.

"Episodes" was created by Jeffrey Klarik ("Mad About You") and David Crane ("Friends") and stars Stephen Mangan and Tamsin Greig as Sean and Beverly Lincoln, a British comedy writing team who are duped into coming to America for an adaptation based on their show, with former "Friends" star Matt LeBlanc in the starring role. In the recently aired season finale, Matt’s antics had the Lincolns on the verge of splitting up just before they discovered their show had been picked up.

"Shameless" is adapted from the UK series with the same name by John Wells ("ER") and stars William H. Macy as Frank Gallagher, the drunken patriarch of a highly dysfunctional family that is only held together by his oldest daughter, Fiona (Emmy Rossum).

“The viewer loyalty and critical acclaim that has met both ‘Shameless’ and ‘Episodes’ since their January debuts makes it clear that these two brash and sophisticated series are burgeoning hits,” said David Nevins, Showtime’s entertainment president. “John Wells is carving out a tone that is truly unique in the television landscape —equal parts drama and comedy.  And ‘Episodes’ marks the universally embraced and hilarious return to television of an inspired comedy triumvirate: Matt LeBlanc, and creators Jeffrey Klarik and David Crane.”

Although "Shameless" is set to return for a 12 episode second season, it’s currently unknown how many installments of "Episodes" will be ordered. The first season consisted of only seven shows.
