Sylvester Stallone Not Directing ‘Expendables 2?’

Stallone isn't planning to be behind the camera for the action sequel. Maybe he's too busy with that reboot of 'Rhinestone.'

Sylvester Stallone Not Directing 'Expendables 2?'

Sylvester Stallone’s 2010 hit The Expendables was the manliest thing we’ve seen since that time Charles Atlas got drunk with a bear, stole its girlfriend and then went back in time to beat up Genghis Khan. The film was little more than an excuse to get as many (male) action stars on screen at one time while beating each other up, and starred Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Steve Austin, Gary Daniels and many, many more. The sequel was inevitable, but Stallone’s involvement? A little less so, at least as a director.

Yes, the Los Angeles Times is reporting that Sylvester Stallone currently has no intention of directing The Expendables 2, and has been meeting with other filmmakers about the project. No word on whom, but given the superstar nature of the film we’d certainly hope his shortlist is an action aficionado’s wet dream. A brief list of directors we’d like to shamelessly promote for the job:

John McTiernan (Predator), Jackie Chan (Police Story), Luc Besson (Leon: The Professional), Corey Yuen (The Transporter), Roland Emmerich (Universal Soldier), John Carpenter (Assault on Precinct 13), Tony Scott (Man on Fire), Walter Hill (The Warriors), Louis Leterrier (Unleashed) …Sorry, we’d go on but we’re just drooling now.

There’s been a lot of speculation about The Expendables 2, which Stallone claims he’s "going to try to do something that’s quite radical" with. One of the more popular internet memes has revolved around an all-star action heroine lineup to counter our heroes, consisting of the likes of Sigourney Weaver, Cynthia Rothrock, Angelina Jolie, Michelle Yeoh, Linda Hamilton and so on, but there’s nothing substantiating that idea. It just seems cool. At the very least Arnold Schwarzenegger’s schedule should be opened up by now, allowing him to take on an actual role in the sequel.

Crave Online will return with more Expendables news if it turns out to be pendable after all.
