Remember that really badass short film which put a “real world” spin on the Mortal Kombat license? Yea, it’s hard to forget. But in case you did miss the moment when this extended trailer took the internet by storm, here’s your chance to see what all the buzz was about:
The above clip was directed by Kevin Tancharoen and used as a pitch to Warner Bros. for a Mortal Kombat film reboot which removed a lot of the fantasy elements from the series and instead replaced them with a toned-down practical feel. The short feels like a combination of Mortal Kombat meets David Fincher’s Se7en.
Unfortunately, Warner Bros. didn’t bite on the project. But that doesn’t mean it’s DOA. Bloody Disgusting has the first word that Kevin Tancharoen’s Mortal Kombat universe will see life as a 10-part webisode series. The series will be written by Tancharoen himself, Todd Helbing and Aaron Helbing, and will once again star Michael Jai White (Spawn, Black Dynamite) as Jax. Other characters expected to appear (but not confirmed) are Shang Tsung, Liu Kang, Sub Zero, Durak, Kabal, Kitana/Mileena and Scorpion.
If this new series is building off the original short, the chances of seeing Johnny Cage are slim to none. But while you mourn his death, read our exclusive interview with the actor about the original Mortal Kombat: Rebirth short from back in June 2010.
