Kieron Gillen Takes Over 'Uncanny X-men'

Welcome to the X-Men, Kieron Gillen. Hope you survive the experience!

Earlier today, Marvel confirmed what many had suspected: Kieron Gillen will be the new solo writer of "Uncanny X-men" beginning in April. Gillen joined the series as Matt Fraction’s co-writer in December for the current "Contagion" storyline, effectively paving the way for Gillen’s run.

Gillen had already been deeply involved with other "X-Men" related titles, including the "S.W.O.R.D." miniseries and the recently launched "Generation Hope." Prior to that, Gillen had also written his creator owned book "Phonogram," as well as several books for Marvel including "Beta Ray Bill: Godhunter," "Thor" and a well received "Siege: Loki" one-shot which eventually to his other new Marvel book, "Journey Into Mystery."

"There were a lot of things going on that led to [the writing change]," explained Marvel editor Nick Lowe. "First, Matt and Kieron are good friends. They were worked very closely on the ‘Five Lights’ storyline and the planning for ‘Generation Hope.’ Second, Matt had just started working on ‘Fear Itself’ and it goes without saying that these events are hugely time-consuming. With his landmark run on ‘Invincible Iron Man’ and his launch of ‘Mighty Thor,’ something had to give, so instead we put he and Kieron together on ‘Uncanny.’"

"One thing led to another and it just became apparent that Matt’s talents were better spent on ‘Fear Itself,’ ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Thor,’" continued Lowe. "Kieron had done such a great job co-writing ‘Uncanny’ and blew us away with ‘Generation Hope’ so it was a no-brainer. Also, Kieron completed the obstacle course much faster than the other applicants."

Gillen’s first issue will be "Uncanny X-Men" #534.1, which will be designed as stand alone issue dealing with the X-Men’s attempts to sell the public on their affiliation with Mangneto. Carlos Pacheco will draw issue #534.1, while Terry Dodson will return with #535 which will kick off a new storyline focusing on Kitty Pryde and Colossus and featuring a return to the Breakworld from Joss Whedon’s "Astonishing X-Men" run.
