Rise of the Guardians might not have any relation to The Legend of the Guardians, but it sounds like a hoot anyway. Dreamworks Animation has announced a star-studded cast for its latest 3D (sigh…) animated epic. Based on an upcoming series of novels by William Joyce titled The Guardians of Childhood. The story pits Santa Claus, The Easter Bunny, Jack Frost and The Tooth Fairy against The Boogeyman. Huh. Maybe this was that Nightmare Before Christmas sequel everyone was going on about a while ago…
Dreamworks has cast the hell out of the picture, which is set to star 30 Rock‘s Alec Baldwin as Santa Claus, X-Men‘s Hugh Jackman as The Easter Bunny, Star Trek‘s Chris Pine as Jack Frost and Wedding Crashers‘ Isla Fisher as The Tooth Fairy. They’ll set aside their differences, or something, to fight Jude Law as The Boogeyman. Although actually, they’ll all have different names than those classic characters: Santa Claus is called ‘North,’ The Easter Bunny is called ‘Bunnymund,’ Isla Fisher is ‘Tooth’ and so on. I guess you can’t trademark ‘Santa Claus’ anymore.
William Joyce is no stranger to moviegoers… 2007’s Meet the Robinsons was based on his book A Day with Wilbur Robinson, and he’s contributed concept art to Toy Story and A Bug’s Life, and even designed the opening title sequence to Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium. Joyce also created the children’s television series Rolie Polie Olie and George Shrinks. Joyce is set to co-direct Rise of the Guardians with Peter Ramsey. Guillermo del Toro and Michael Siegel are executive producing.
Rise of the Guardians is set for a November 21, 2012 release. Thanks to NextMovie for the scoop.
