Is Rob Zombie’s ‘Lords of Salem’ Just ‘Hocus Pocus?’

Is Rob Zombie's 'Lords of Salem' Just 'Hocus Pocus?'

In a week full of reboot, remake and sequel news it’s refreshing to see an original film announced, even if it sure sounds like a remake: Rob Zombie, director of The Devil’s Rejects and Halloween (the remake), will direct the upcoming horror film The Lords of Salem this spring, working from his own script. Hollywood Reporter points out that film will be the third release from Haunted Movies, whose first film Insidious, a supernatural horror film from Saw co-creator James Wan, is awaiting release on April 1st, 2011. The second, The Bay, comes from acclaimed director Barry Levinson (Diner) and will tell the story of an ecological disaster wreaking havoc in a small Maryland town.

In The Lords of Salem, a 300 year old coven of witches returns to modern day Massachusetts. We presume their intentions are of the unpleasant variety, since Rob Zombie previous directed such ultraviolent horror flicks as House of 1000 Corpses, but maybe not: it sure sounds like the plot of the 1993 Bette Midler comedy Hocus Pocus to us. I mean, seriously… it’s the exact same plot. Oh well, Zombie’s only human. Maybe more human than that. It’s not even that bad an idea. We actually kinda liked Hocus Pocus.

CRAVE Online will be back to stir up more toil and trouble as more Lords of Salem news burns and bubbles.
