Basically: Suck at something until you don't.

After hearing the story of Sam Vogel, aka Jauz, you will likely have one of two reactions.

First: You will feel incredibly old.

Jauz, pronounced “jaws,” is a music producer and DJ on the rise. His ticket has become especially hot, thanks to popular remixes of A$AP Mob’s “Hella Hoes” and Childish Gambino’s “3005.” And, oh yeah, he’s just 21 years old.

Second: You will feel exhausted .

Jauz is gaining some serious attention for his creative genre-blending. He’s presently on a summer tour that spans CA to DC. And his advice for attaining such success literally sounds like this: go do it – suck at it, suck at it, suck at it more.. and one day it will pay off.

While we are fully aware that young people can change the world, and can have incredibly thoughtful presences in society, the manner in which Vogel speaks really makes him seem like an old soul. Because he’s painfully honest about how he’s made it thus far.

Vogel has clearly always been into music, and what is even clearer – he has an aptitude for it. He talks about his influences being pretty standard as a kid into rock, metal, and hip hop. Developing an affinity for Metallica, Vogel reflects that he, “Picked up a guitar, and learned every Metallica song I could find.”

But being able to learn other people’s music is only part of the battle. What happens when you want make your own? Vogel speaks of discovering EDM, the uncharted territory of music, and realizing, “I can do this by myself and not rely on anyone, and just do it”.

From there, it was about dedication. Jauz gave himself a goal. And the bar was set high. He said, “I’m not going to go to these festivals until I’m playing them.”

To date, Jauz has not been to Hard Summer. Come August 2015, Jauz plays Hard Summer.
