The White Stripes have called it quits. During their stunning 13 year career, the duo – comprised of Jack White and drummer Meg White – released six studio albums.
The first signs of trouble came in September 2007, when they announced the cancellation of 18 tour dates due to Meg’s acute anxiety problems.
The White Stripes last performed together on February 20th, 2009 for the final episode of Late Night with Conan O’Brien, where they performed a version of “We’re Going to Be Friends”. The quiet performance was a thin shell of the normally spitfire blues-demon live experience the duo provides, but nobody thought the understated song would wind up becoming the final performance ever by the band.
A final message from Jack & Meg, on their official website:
They will be dearly missed.
